I have also given the tach question some consideration but (based on my own individual riding style) really have'nt found the need for one other than just looks and conversational value. Why, you might ask. Because the gearing on my bike, as I have it set up, sets my shift points to 2nd at 20 mph; 3rd at 30 mph; 4th at 40 mph and 5th at 50 mph. So you see a tach would be somewhat redundant. This is obviously normal riding acceleration. For aggravate a neighbor/confirm the negative biker image type of acceleration I just listen to when the engine tells me to shift. It works surprizingly well!
